What The Heck Is A Life Coach Anyway?
The term "Life Coach" has become a lot more mainstream in the past few years but there's still some confusion when I tell people what I do. They seem to only hear the word "Coach" and then proceed to ask me what sport I teach. I assure you, I'm terrible at any game that requires movement. But I am blessed with the ability to coach someone through the game of life.I like to think that a Life Coach is like a Personal Trainer for your soul. Whether you've worked with a trainer or not, you know that they push you past your physical plateau. They motivate you to keep going when you want to give up and they force you to "show up" even when you feel like eating a bag of chips on the couch. And in the end, what you see are amazing results that you might not have achieved on your own. A Life Coach provides this same kind of service. Whether it's to help you with your career, health and well being, parenting, relationships, or you just want to make some "life" changes. A Life Coach will motivate, support, listen, brainstorm and hold you accountable as you set your goals. Most importantly, hiring a coach will force you to show up in your life. And that's half the battle.
When speaking to prospective clients, I often get asked the question "I have a best friend, why would I need a Life Coach?" The difference is very simple. As a coach, I'm able to be objective. I don't know how you acted in high school, who you dated in college or how much you weighed before your kids were born. I'm not envious of your career, financial situation or how you look in skinny jeans. Basically, I'm not trying to compare my life to yours. Now I'm not implying that your friendships are superficial. I'm sure your relationship with your best gal pal is as deep as Oprah and Gayle. But sometimes when you're so close to someone, they're too invested in your life. They know too much about your tendencies. When giving you advice, your friend may have the best of intentions, but may be projecting her fears and insecurities onto you. That often leaves you feeling more confused than when you started. As a Life Coach for moms, I'm here to offer you a non-judgmental, safe and supportive environment for you to talk about anything that's challenging you. I will offer you a place to vent but I won't allow you to stay there. I will listen to you, motivate you and challenge you in ways that will move you forward. Together, we will create the road map that leads you towards a purpose driven life and make sure that your journey is one worth taking. Please know that I am not a therapist, counselor or consultant.
