Organizing Tips For Busy Mothers.

Trying to keep your house neat and tidy when you have kids is like expecting a pregnant woman to hold off on carbs. But that doesn't mean that the soles of your feet are destined for Lego imprints. You can declutter your house and life with these simple organizing tips.

Organizing Tips For Your Home

  • Get rid of one thing everyday. Recycle old paper, donate clothes or toys, or throw out something that's taking up too much space.
  • When you're tempted to purchase something new, think if it's a necessity or just a want. If it's a want, make sure you don't already have something similar.
  • Practice "one in one out". For every one thing you bring into the house, find one other thing you can donate, recycle or toss.
  • Get rid of things you haven't looked at or used for at least a year.
  • When you hang your clothes in your closet, turn the hanger so it's facing you. After you wear that piece of clothing, turn the hanger the other way. Check back in a few months. If you still have any hangers facing you, it's time to donate that piece of clothing.
  • Declutter one room at a time. Start with a small area and work until it’s done. When you tackle it in small chunks it's more manageable and you feel more accomplished.
  • Make your bedroom a clutter free sanctuary. Eliminate stuff from night tables, floors and dressers.
  • Time your tasks. Give yourself tight but realistic deadlines.
  • Plan your weekly meals every Sunday night. Write down the ingredients that you'll need and put them on your grocery list.
  • To get rid of kitchen clutter, clear the counters of anything that you don't use at least once a day.
  • Take everything off the fridge doors like magnets, coupons, and pictures for an instant clean look.
  • When you're cutting vegetables for one meal, slice the whole thing and store the rest in containers. That way they'll be ready for a quick snack or meal.
  • Plan to eat your meals at roughly the same time every day.
  • Assign certain days of the week for different chores. For example, Monday and Thursday are laundry days.
  • Make Sunday a fun, family day. Even God took a day off.

Organizing Tips For Your Paper

  • After you finish reading a newspaper or magazine, rip out the pictures and articles you want to save. File them away and recycle the rest.
  • Have a folder of articles or other papers that requires your attention. Take this folder to appointments so you can catch up on your reading while you wait.
  • Read the news online.
  • Pay your bills online.
  • Open mail everyday and recycle junk mail.
  • Create a system where it only takes a few minutes to find something. For example, find a place to hang your keys or develop a filing system for bills etc.
  • When dealing with a pile of paper, turn it upside down and start sorting. The stuff on the bottom can usually be recycled.

Organizing Tips For Your Life

  • Try and accomplish one thing every day for you, your family and your career.

  • Do the stuff you really want to do first. It'll get you in the right frame of mind to tackle the stuff you dread.
  • Cut your to do list in half. Be realistic. If you finish everything on your list, enjoy the free time. If not, move what you didn't finish to another day.
  • Write down birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions in your day planner calendar.
  • Use one planner for both your personal and professional life.
  • Schedule in time just for you every day.
  • Commit to making only one change at a time.
  • Get all the stuff you want/need to do out of your head and into an idea book.
  • Keep up with your email Inbox. If you don't read the newsletters right away, unsubscribe.

  • Focus on one thing at a time. No more multitasking.
  • Schedule in time to exercise.
  • Do mindless work like folding laundry, sorting through piles of paper or organizing photographs while you’re watching your favourite show.

Organizing Tips For Toys

  • Every time your children get something new, donate something used and get it out of the house.
  • Give each kid their own box, bag or basket to keep their personal belongings in.
  • Designate bins for specific toys- e.g. Lego, puzzles. Take a picture and stick it on the front of the bin so younger kids know where to put stuff when they clean up.
  • Instead of buying a lot of little toys, save and get a bigger item. It cuts down on the clutter.
  • Designate a room or corner as the "playroom". If possible, choose a space with no carpeting or furniture for easy clean up.
  • Make the space fun and inspiring.
  • Showcase your child's art on the walls instead of the fridge.
